Glorieusement ou de façon symbolique, on ne sait, Tony Blair donnait une interview au premier jour d’émission de la nouvelle chaîne en anglais de la station TV arabe Al Jazeera. Blair était interrogé par Sir David Frost, journaliste fameux, britannique et anobli, recruté par Al Jazeera pour mener la chaîne anglaise de la station.
La question a été posée à Blair de savoir si l’aventure en Irak était un désastre et le Premier ministre a laissé échapper un c’est vrai mais, pour aussitôt enchaîner sur des explications tendant à réduire l’effet de cette réponse. Le Guardian, notamment, détaille l’intervention.
«Tony Blair conceded last night that western intervention in Iraq had been a disaster. In an interview with Al-Jazeera, the Arabic TV station, the prime minister agreed with the veteran broadcaster Sir David Frost when he suggested that intervention had so far been pretty much of a disaster.
»Mr Blair said: It has, but you see, what I say to people is, why is it difficult in Iraq?’ It’s not difficult because of some accident in planning, it’s difficult because there’s a deliberate strategy al-Qaida with Sunni insurgents on one hand, Iranian-backed elements with Shia militias on the other to create a situation in which the will of the majority for peace is displaced by the will of the minority for war.»
Al Jazeera, sur son site, s’est montré beaucoup plus discret que les journaux britanniques (outre le Guardian, le Times de Londres, par exemple, avec tout de même une restriction : «Tony Blair went close last night to admitting that the invasion of Iraq had been disastrous»). Al Jazeera mentionne l’intervention mais sans relever le terme disaster ni en faire l’événement justifiant d’en faire un titre d’article. Cette attitude relève de l’intention de la station arabe de prêter le moins possible le flanc à la polémique.
